an overview of the syllabus

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

This influential Classical yoga text, written over 2000 years ago, is a step-by-step approach to self discovery. Learn the 8 fold path and unpick, explore and interpret The Sutras so they become accessible and relevant to your yoga practice and every day life.

How to Develop a Personal Practice

Don’t know where to get started with a personal practice? Or maybe you need some ideas on how to develop, structure or even shake-up your existing practice? Get tips, advice and support on creating a realistic and sustainable yoga practice for yourself.

Poses

What is the primary intention of a back bend? What is the spine doing when we twist? Explore a range of poses in detail, including their Sanskrit names and benefits. Learn the difference between static and dynamic movement, and learn the art of effective counter posing.

Breathing & Pranayama

Study the mechanics of breathing. Learn how to breathe properly, using the lungs effectively rather than taking ‘a deep breath’. Explore Pranayama (Prana - life force + Ayama - expansion), through a safe, non-prescriptive, staged approach . Learn why we practice and when its appropriate.

Relaxation

When we cease to be distracted by the five senses we are able to rest deeply. Practice a range of relaxation + Yoga Nidra techniques and learn the history of relaxation. Did you know relaxation is actually a very recent yoga phenomenon?

Meditation

Discover how concentration practices and developing a one pointed focus can lead us into meditation - total absorption in the object of focus. Practice a range of different techniques and notice how the mind becomes quieter, stiller and more spacious.

History of Yoga

Yoga is ever changing, constantly evolving, and forever re-inventing itself. Take a journey through thousands of years, briefly exploring each yoga period - the philosophical ideas and practices that define each one. Find out how yoga has become what it is today.

Different Paths of Yoga

Whilst we may have come to associate yoga with physical movement and poses, there are actually many other paths of yoga that do not include a physical practice at all. Some focus more on study and reflection, whilst others are based on devotion. Learn more about these paths.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha is often mistakenly used as a term to describe a generalised style of yoga. It is, in fact, a path of yoga originating from the Medieval period, influenced by Tantra and characterised by physical poses (Asana), cleansing practices (Kriya) and Prana expansion (Pranayama).

Prana & The Subtle Body

Prana is the life force. Everything affects prana. Some of the most direct ways of influencing prana are through the breath, energy gestures (Mudra) and energy locks (Bandha). Learn about energy channels (Nadis) and centres (Chakras) and how the practices of yoga help harness Prana.
